I never liked to be pigeon-holed on what I'm "specialised" in. Afterall, I own the camera which allows me to take pretty much whatever comes in front of it, sort of. However, as a creative professional, I know what my core is and what I am not confident of shooting. College Green, heard or been to that place?

That's where President SR Nathan used to stay during his university days and I had the pleasure to be there to capture the moment as he walked down memory lane.

Besides celebrating his homecoming, President Nathan also officially opened the National University of Singapore Society's Bukit Timah Guild House – the place where he also had his old hostel.

Last but not least, I was thrilled that one of the photos was chosen for the cover page of the October/December 2009 issue of Graduate Magazine by NUSS.

Poetry in Motion

Raffles Gymnastics Academy recently held a Christmas Party in their new gym hall which I think is probably the biggest (and air-conditioned!) in Singapore.

They have students of all ages ranging from those under 5 up to adults and offer both recreational and high-performance programmes. The students put up a performance during the night and I tell you, it was really awesome to see them doing the things you see on the Olympics, it's just... pure grace, poise, skill, technique, precision and... lack of words here, but just awesome.

Anyways, here're a few highlights of the performance.

The weather hasn't been that fantastic these few days. Yesterday wasn't any different – it rained. Had a photoshoot session at Temasek Polytechnic Business School for their TP BizNews newsletter and we had the idea of doing aerial shots of students lying on grass (in daylight of course)... but ended shooting them against white for the designer to do some digital super-imposing work.

As usual, the selected students looked good, all fresh and ready for the shoot. Here're some of the shots.

You've seen them on TV, there's even a crappy movie made out of it... crap perhaps only because am not really a fast-and-furious-movie kinda person but I was wrong when I got invited to the Formula Drift 2009 Pro-am series event. Well, nowhere as good as the ones you see on ESPN and stuff but enough to get you in the mood to snap these cars as they intentionally over-steer their cars.

...and if you're a fan, the name Tenku Djan should be familiar to you. He was the winner for the event.

Last but not the least, world champion stunt rider, Mattie Griffin, did some great freestyle performance on the show too.

/ Singapore Corporate Awards 2010 - Best Annual Report > BRONZE

This was the first annual report where the photography, digital imaging and design layout were executed by a one-man-show, yours truly. Actually, the whole process was easier than I thought. Initially, the idea was to have their ever-growing portfolio of products (loads of 'em) being stacked up but eventually, only a selected few were featured on the cover and the rest were inserted on the inside pages. Nevertheless, I was happy with the final product and more importantly, so was the client.

Here's the report itself - Click on the arrows to flip through the pages. :) It was a fairly simple and clean report – Printed on matt art stock and spot UV varnish was applied on the products visual on top of the matt lamination.

Lippo Group

Curious Touch Milk is one paper stock that I had always wanted to use and finally a client, Lippo Group (Singapore), agreed on using it for their corporate brochure. It was side-bound with the Milk paper stock wrapped on a hard board. The red spine was just some covering material which name I can't recall. The title of the book, Leading Enterprise, was embossed with spot UV varnish.

My Gear

CAQ... Commonly Asked Question. Not that photographers like to show off or anything but I bet if you're one and you've just met another photographer, the subject of gear will somehow come into discussion. So... I reckon this may interest fellow photographers more than anyone.

I, for one, am quite a techie; I appreciate state-of-the-art stuff. If there's something that will make my life/job easier or more efficient, more often than not, I'll save up for it. Certainly, owning good cameras and lenses doesn't instantly put you in the best photographers list but I do believe that any limitations I may have as a photographer are mine and not due to the gear I own. Doubt you'll ever catch me saying, "Argh, if only I had that lens, I could've done that shot".

Body / I started off with Nikon F601 (always good to start with film) and then migrated to Canon EOS system, 40D, followed by 5D Classic and have settled with the 21-megapixel machines – the 1Ds Mark III and 5D Mark II. I've recently acquired the Wireless File Transmitter for the 1Ds Mark III – boy has it made my life way easier especially for on-location shoots. I would HIGHLY recommend to anyone who does tethered shooting.

Lenses / I use only Canon glass, haven't seen the need to try 3rd parties. Anyways, they are 70-200 f/2.8 IS, 24-70 f/2.8, 50 f/1.2 and 17-40 f/4.

Lighting / I have been happy with Elinchrom system. Actually, I started off using Jinbei strobes which I still find is decent and very much affordable - good for back-up. I also have two sets of 580EXII speedlites and CP-E4 battery packs frequently used for events and occasionally, as off-shoe strobes for outdoor lighting needs – do not under estimate its size.

More often than not, I use wireless triggering for convenience and neatness. For that, I use Elinchrom's Skyports. Works wonderfully, have not failed on me and of course, it's the only thing that allows me to trigger and control my BXRi strobes wirelessly.

Support / Tripod wise, it's Velbon Carbon Fiber NeoCarmagne 640(A) with Markins Q3 head. There are times where I will use a monopod and I have the Velbon NeoPod 6 with Manfrotto 494RC2 head. I love twist-lock mechanisms which to me, allows faster deployment.

People have asked me on transporting my equipment for on-location shoots and so far, the Prestar trolley is the only one I found that comes with rubber wheels – You'll look silly if it comes with plastic wheels - perhaps more durable but noisy as hell! I pack everything neatly in two plastic carts (from Toyogo) stacked. All my stands and longer items will be above the carts and secured with elastic straps. Maybe I should snap a picture or two one day.

Bag / For most commercial assignments where more often than not I will bring almost everything, I will drag along my ThinkTank Airport TakeOff. Otherwise, I love my black Domke F-2 and Domke F-6. Now I can finally understand why women obsess over bags – you really DO need different bags for different occasions.

Shop / Most of the gear I use is from B&H in NYC, USA. Great products (and quality), great customer service, great prices (even after shipping & import duty tax!)... I can't ask for more. Orders will always arrive at my doorstep in good order and sometimes, earlier than expected!

Rendy Aryanto, previously a creative director in a BTL design agency, is presently

a freelance commercial and editorial photographer based in Singapore.

A graduate from Middlesex University in the UK, majoring in Visual

Communication, Rendy has a deep passion for the visual arts, in particular

photography. What began as an avid interest in photography, inspired by

photojournalism, has now seen Rendy build up a wealth of experience in

commercial and editorial photography.

To date, he has worked on commercial photography projects with a spectrum of

clients ranging from MNCs and SMEs to institutions and statutory boards.

As a creative director by trade, with an eye for detail and visual

conceptualization, Rendy has an intuitive and clear understanding of the needs

of even the savviest of clients, including art directors and designers. Known for

his approachable and easygoing personality, Rendy is an effective communicator

at ease with working with different types of people and subject matter.

On top of commercial projects, Rendy is regularly commissioned for

press/events coverage. He also contributes his time to non-profit organizations

and is always on the look out for interesting pro bono projects to collaborate on.

With several awards already under his belt as a creative director, Rendy looks
